Lesson Description: Students will create a book report (or some other report) as a web page, combining their original text with graphics and related links that they find on the web.

Procedure:
Prior to internet access:
1) The class should have a basic book report already written (to the
standards of the teacher).
2) It would help if students were familiar with search engines.
3) Optional: student drawings could be scanned and included.
With internet access:
1) Each student creates a new Claris Home Page document and saves it
in his/her folder*.
*Or the teacher can create a Claris Home Page template for students
to open.
2) Students type their book reports (or copy and paste from ClarisWorks).
3) Choose colors (background, text, links):
a. Select Edit-Document OptionsÉ (or click on the icon
).
b. Select the colors you would like for your background and text.
c. Save this in your folder as an html file (ending in .html, no spaces).If you prefer,use a background pattern instead of a color.
4) Students add links to related web sites (about the author, locations, etc.):
a. Use Netscape or Explorer to search for related web sites.
b. Copy (-C) the URL (address -- http://...) or write it down.
c. Switch to Claris Home Page.
d. Paste (-V) the address.
e. Highlight the address you've pasted.
f. Select Insert-Link to URL... (or click on the icon).
g. Paste or type in the URL (http://...).
Formatting text is very similar to ClarisWorks. For example, you
might want to center your text (

You can increase or decrease the font size (
). You can choose bold, italic, or
teletype (
).
For headings and lists, select the type of formatting from the
paragraph format box (
).
Remember, you can always highlight what you've typed and change it
at any time -- color for instance (
).
5) Add pictures from the web pages you find*.
a. Use Netscape or Explorer to search for related web sites.
b. Click and hold on the image (use the right button on a PC).
c. Select File-Save This Image As... and save the picture (in the student folder).
d. Switch to Claris Home Page
e. Click on the Insert Image icon(or select Insert-ImageÉ).
f. Find and open the picture.
g. Double-click on the picture to change its size or other settings.Please adhere to the TUSD guidelines regarding copyright.
6) OPTIONAL: Add the e-mail address of the contact person (student or
teacher address).
a. Type your message (i.e. Send Comments to Bob Smith).
b. Highlight the text.
c. Select Insert-Link to URL... (or click on the icon).
d. Click on SHOW EXAMPLES to see examples of URL formats
e. Paste or type in the URL (mailto:Username@Host, where Username@Host is an e-mail address).
7) Spell-check the web page.
a. Select Edit--Check spelling (
=).
b. Replace misspelled words and skip the rest (including e-mail addresses)

Contact the person who maintains your web site to place the web page(s) on the Internet. That may be you! If nobody serves that purpose at your site, contact Allen Swanson (aswanson@setmms.tusd.k12.az.us).
Extensions/ Follow-up Ideas:
1) Students can scan or add digital photographs.
2) Students can present their completed book-report web page on an overhead in class.
3) Other types of reports could be created using this process.
