Chapter Starter Kit:
Membership and SEDS-USA
Introduction
Our web site (currently under construction) will make maintaining membership and alumni lists rather simple once complete. Your chapter representative and your president will be responsible for maintaining these online lists so that SEDS-USA is aware of all its members. If a student becomes a member of your chapter, they are eligible members of SEDS-USA immediately. Graduated members are moved to "alumni" status and kept on a separate list.
Keeping a private list for your own records is also suggested for quick reference and personal data preferences.
Your Chapter as a SEDS-USA Member
When your chapter is initiated, it will be necessary to appoint a chapter representative for SEDS-USA. Once a chapter has been initiated, there are three main things that are required to remain a chapter.
- Dues must be paid each year, more on this can be found in the bylaws and web site.
- A chapter president and chapter representative (councilor) must be appointed.
- An initial membership list must be submitted and regularly maintained.
***By "claiming as a member", you may want to discriminate your "members" from "those who showed up for the first meeting". This is where dues come in, or where members who regularly attend meetings get included. Aside from commitment to the chapter, no discrimination should be shown by your members. Even though we are an alliance of students, SEDS is open to all young people interested in space. Even older members should be encouraged to stay on as chapter advisors.
Your chapter representative has two more duties. One is to submit the monthly reports (mentioned in above sections and available online) to the Director of Chapter Affairs. Finally, this representative is responsible for attendance to the bi-monthly Council of Chapters Meeting. Obviously, this representative (councilor) should be a trustworthy individual. I would suggest it not be the same as your president or webmaster to avoid high workloads.
