Sites of the Week for August 1997

Week of August 4, 1997

Life in Space Covers
Much of the history of the space age, particularly the heady days of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, was told through the cover and pages of Life magazine. Time Warner has collected the Life magazine covers from the 1950s through the 1990s about space into this part of their Pathfinder site. The articles aren't available, but the cover images alone tell the story of America's growth into space.

Voyager Golden Record
The two Voyager spacecraft each carried a golden record which stores some of the sights and sounds of planet Earth, should it ever fall into the hands of an extraterrestrial civilization. This Web site provides some background on the record, and also has a number of images and greetings (in dozens of languages) that were included on the record.

Clyde W. Tombaugh Memorial Window
This site details the efforts to install a stained glass window in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces, New Mexico, commemorating the astronomer who discovered Pluto in 1930. Tombaugh lived in Las Cruces from the mid-1950s until his death earlier this year and his many accomplishments include founding the church. They are currently working on a design and seeking donations; ways to contribute to the fund are listed on the site. A fitting tribute for one of the century's great astronomers.
