DEBBI PETERSON: Drummer Extraordinare!

Following The Bangles split in 1989, Debbi Peterson kept a low profile, divoting herself to her husband and family - not sure if she was interested in making music again. Then in 1991, Miles Copeland dialed up Debbi and urged her to take another stab at the business. He urged her to write with former Go-Go's drummer, Gina Schock. As it turned out, the collaboration was favorable, and they decided to form a band - Smashbox. (This group also contained B-52's bassist Sara Lee and was augmented by the pop vocal duo, Wendy and Lisa.) The fledgling lineup lasted all of a few months before falling apart - it was just Debbi and Gina that got signed to IRS Records late in 1991. The duo hit the studio with Humberto Gatica and got a far as recording five tracks with him before the project fell apart sometime in 1992. Gina had decided to leave.(Rumor has it Gina felt Debbi's husband, Steve Botting, the band's manager, was interfering too much in the creative process.)

With Gina gone and less than half an album finished, Debbi, who wasn't entirely interested in a solo career, spent some time both looking for another partner and wondering if she should throw the whole set out. Luckily, Debbi found a partner in Ex-River City People lead vocalist, Siobhan Maher. Debbi and Siobhan weren't strangers to each other at all. They met at an Indian Restaurant in LA back in 1989.( The Bangles had loaned some of their instruments to the River City People during the recording of their debut album that year.) Debbi phoned up Siobhan not a month or two after the River City People had broken up in 1992. She sent a tape of songs she was working on, and Siobhan, who liked what she heard, got together with Debbi and started working on new songs. It was then that Kindred Spirit was born. They released a 4 track single, "Here In My Eyes" late in 1992 in Europe and went on tour as the opening act for Joan Amastranding. This opening act slot gave the acoustic duo plenty of recodnition. At the conclusion of the tour, they returned to the studio to continue working on various tracks. The record was planned for a Feb 1993 release, but production delays, and a lawsuit put the project on a temporary hold.

Gina Schock and Debbi Peterson had written a bunch of material, which was slated for the album, but Gina's decision to leave might have opened up a controversy on the use of that material. The dispute apparently lead to a major falling out between Debbi and Gina, and it resulted in a lawsuit which Gina filed to "regain control of her material."

Once those issues were ironed out, Kindred Spirit's debut album, "Kindred Spirit" finally reached record store shelves in June 1995. The album featured a number of different musical styles. From simple acoustic tunes (Like "Ask Me No Questions", the Lp's first single.) to spanish tinged ballads, dance and R&B constructions. The album also featured the duo's excellant block harmonies. (They are the "Harmony Pigs.") Unfortunately, the album came out with little or no promotion and so no singles were charted.

By 1996, Kindred Spirit was one of several hundred acts who lost their recording contracts when IRS Records went backrupt. Certainly, the labels financial problems contributed to the lack of promotional efforts for the album and its attending singles. The duo continued writing songs together and recorded "Christmas Son" for the IRS Records compilation, Mother and Child" They had hoped on getting another record deal as late as 1997, but it appears that that didn't happen. Siobhan Maher had married record producer Ray Kennedy in early 1995 and gave birth to their first child, Evie in December of 1995. Debbi would follow with baby boy Brian in July of 1997. Familial obligations ultimately proved to be the higher priority and Kindred Spirit ceased to exist as a band.

In the intervening years, Debbi would surface again in 1999 as a member of the reactivated Bangles! (New album and tour due in 2003) Siobhan Maher would lauch her solo career in 2002 with her album, Immigrant Flower" (A tuneful collection of country-pop-rock songs.)

In the midst of all this, Debbi Peterson has told fans that she would jump at a chance to work with Siobhan Maher again at some point! So who knows what will be in store? Debbi will be drumming... just the same!
